9x9 tiles asbestos how to#
Any help is appreciate on what this is and how to best treat it. Before I get too far along just trying to get an idea from folks that know more than me. Not sure if this is possibly water behind the tile seeping thru. Asphalt floor tile that is 1/8' thick will weigh about 1/2 pound per square foot. But I'd have to glue down the loose tiles as well as level out the floor in areas where tile pieces are missing - if there's an easy way to do that, this might be the quicker and less messy option. If I can get the tiles off, the adhesive underneath seems thin enough that I don't need to chip or grind that off to level the floor. The problem is not chemical off-gassing but rather fine dust particles created when the asbestos is agitated or disturbed such as by sanding, drilling or removal. Spraying down the floor with water would probably help, but I'm sure I'd still create a lot of dust with an air hammer. I can wear a respirator, but if these are indeed asbestos, I'd want to avoid excessive dust creation so that it doesn't get into other parts of the house. My air hammer and chisel bit would probably make quick work of it, but would probably create a ton of dust. Or I could use a 5-in-1 tool and a hammer, though that might be slow going. I borrowed a removal tool from a friend, but I think the leading edge is too blunt to be useful. Get an empty spray bottle and fill it with water. I recently removed a small, 17-square ft. Some of these have been coming loose just from my doing other work in this room. These are just under 1/8" thick and brittle - I can snap them with my hands.
The size would indicate asbestos tiles, but these aren't the vinyl asbestos tiles I've seen articles about. I'm redoing the flooring in a ground floor room (concrete slab underneath).
